Highland Falls Throw Blanket
When I think of crocheted blankets that use more than one stitch, I usually imagine the stitch changes occurring in horizontal rows. I fell in love with the v-stitch when I used it in the Tranquil Morning Throw Blanket, and using the cluster v-stitch in the Mountainside Blooms Baby Blanket was lots of fun!
I’ve always wanted to include a vertical element in a throw blanket, but it’s taken me some time to find just the right stitch to keep things “even” while still changing stitches within the row. After lots of swatching…and frogging…I discovered that the v-stitch was the perfect stitch to achieve this look.
The Highland Falls Throw Blanket uses columns made of v-stitches to create a vertical element in a blanket made of horizontal rows. The v-stitch columns are created by alternating between v-stitches and double crochets. This simple stitch adds so much depth to this beginner-friendly blanket!
The Yarn
After using Caron Jumbo Ombre yarn for the Mason Lake Baby Blanket, I knew I had to use it for another project. I chose Caron Jumbo Ombre in the Faded Jeans colorway for the Highland Falls Throw Blanket. It is soft, has great stitch definition, and the color palate was absolutely stunning. The self-striping feature of the ombre yarn added an extra layer of beauty to this already stellar stitch combination.

1,950 yards, size 4 worsted weight yarn. I used 4 skeins of Caron Jumbo Ombre <12 oz/340 g> <595 yds/544 m> in the Faded Jeans colorway.
US size K/10.5 crochet hook (6.50 mm)

Pattern Notes
The turning ch at the beginning of Row 1 counts as 1 dc.
The ch 2 at the beginning of a row counts as 1 dc.
Repeats within each row are showing within brackets [ ].
Repeats within the brackets are shown in parentheses.
Stitch markers can be used to assist with stitch placement.
In Row 2, all v-sts are worked in the ch-1 sps of the v-sts in the previous rows and all dc are worked in dc of previous row.
How to Make a Throw Blanket Featuring the V-Stitch
Part 1: Blanket Body
Ch 139
Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 5 chs, [sk 1 ch, (v-st in next ch, sk 2 chs) 2 times , v-st in next ch, sk 1 ch, dc in each of next 10 chs] 6 times, sk 1 ch, (v-st in next ch, sk 2 chs) 2 times, v-st in next ch, sk 1 ch, dc in each of next 7 chs, turn. <21 v-sts, 74 dc>

Row 2: ch 2 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in next st and in each of next 5 sts, [sk 1 st, (v-st in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, sk 1 st, dc in each of next 10 sts] 6 times, sk 1 st, (v-st in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, sk 1 st, dc in each of next 6 dc, dc in top of turning ch, turn. <21 v-sts, 74 dc>
Rows 3 – 98: repeat Row 2 96 times
At the end of Row 98, do not turn and do not fasten off. Proceed to border.
Part 2: Border
Rotate 90 degrees
Left side: ch 1, work 196 sc evenly along the left side of the blanket by placing 2 sc in the end of each row, rotate 90 degrees. <196 sc>
Bottom: 2 sc in bottom of 1st ch, 1 sc in each of next 135 chs, 2 sc in last ch, rotate 90 degrees. <139 sc>
Right side: work 196 sc evenly along the left side of the blanket by placing 2 sc in the end of each row, rotate 90 degrees. <196 sc>
Top: 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of next 135 sts or sps, 2 sc in last st, sl st in top of sc to join. <139 sc>
Fasten off. Weave in ends and block to desired dimensions.
