What is a Crochet-A-Long?

You might be wondering, what is a crochet-a-long? A crochet-a-long is an event in the crochet community where everyone works at the same time to complete a project or a set of projects.

While each crochet-a-long, or CAL, is different, there are some common components that appear in most events. The featured pattern is released in sections and everyone participating works on the section at the same time. Sometimes, a CAL features a set of patterns. In that case, each pattern is released individually so that everyone is working on the same project at once.

Frequently, there’s a social media component to a CAL where participants can ask questions, share their progress, and cheer on others as they show off their work.

The Oak Grove Throw Blanket is a great way to learn new stitches. It features 8 different sections, each with a unique stitch or stitch combination.

If you’re new to crochet, you’ll be able to learn new, easy stitches that will add texture and intrigue to any project you make. If you’re a seasoned pro, this blanket will be a fun make. You’ll change your stitches frequently throughout the project, which will make it work up quickly and help keep things from feeling monotonous.

During this free crochet-a-long you’ll make a blanket that showcases 8 different stitch combinations all in one blanket. Whether the stitches are new to you, or you’ve already used them all, you’ll be making a beautiful, unique blanket that is sure to become a household favorite.

Crocheting together is lots of fun!

The wonderful part about a CAL is that you get a chance to meet and work alongside others who love to make crochet throw blankets just like you do!

This free event is being hosted here on the blog and in the Measured and Stitched Crochet Community Facebook Group, so you’ll get a chance to connect with others who enjoy making easy throw blankets and learning new skills. The group is a place for crocheters to share their project progress, ask questions about Measured and Stitched patterns, and enjoy the friendship of people who enjoy the relaxing nature of crochet.

During the Oak Grove Stitch Sampler Throw Blanket CAL we will use the Facebook group to work together. This is where you can get updates about the section being released each week, ask questions, and show off your blanket as you work! I’ll also be sharing a short tutorial video in the group each week to talk about the featured stitches and share tips about working through the weekly portion of the project.

Supplies

Yarn Information

I used Big Twist Value yarn from JOANN for this project becuase I absolutely loved the color options. The deep fall hues made a blanket that looks perfect alongside all of my other home decor. You don’t have to use fall colors, though! This blanket looks great when you use various shades of the same color or coordinating colors to match a theme.

Big Twist Value yarn also worked well becuase I was able to get great stitch definition and still have a soft throw blanket, all for a great price.

To make this blanket you’ll need a total of 2,211 yds / 2,022 m size 4 medium worsted weight yarn, broken down as follows:

  • Color A – 374 yds/317 meters
  • Color B – 325 yds/297 meters
  • Color C – 350 yds/320 meters
  • Color D – 341 yds/312 meters
  • Color E – 821 yds/751 meters

For my sample, I used Cinnamon (Color A), Taupe (Color B), Olive Drab (Color C), Mustard (Color D), and Soft Grey (Color E).

Hook Information

You will need a size J/10.5 (6.50 mm) crochet hook to make this blanket, or the size you need to obtain gauge. You can always adjust up or down a hook size depending on your tension and preferences.

  1. Thank you for presenting such a lovely pattern using affordable yarn that most people can afford! I love Big Twist because it’s a great value, and I appreciate designers that opt for the more affordable priced yarn. Thank you! ❤
