Crossed Double Crochet Stitch Tutorial
The crossed double crochet is as easy as the name suggests. This stitch is created by completing two standard double crochet stitches in a crossed manner so that they form an โxโ.
This stitch can be used on its own, but itโs often paired with rows of single crochet so that the stitches line up and show the same texture on each side of a project. I’ve used it in the quite a few patterns, including the Acadia Trails Throw Blanket and the Echo Cove Baby Blanket. I like to use it within a project to add texture and to intrigue to a design. It’s one of the first special stitches that I used, and it’s one that I really enjoy incorporating into a project.
Using this Tutorial
This tutorial has two sections with instructions.
To learn how to complete the stitch by itself, use the section titled โHow to Complete the Crossed Double Crochet Stitchโ.
It’s also possible to create a project that uses rows of crossed double crochet and single crochet. Use the section titled โHow to Create a Swatch Using the Crossed Double Crochet Stitchโ to learn how to start a project using these stitches.
Materials Info
You can use any yarn and the appropriate size hook to complete this stitch. For this tutorial, Iโm using the following supplies:
- Yarn: Caron Jumbo Ombre in the Faded Jeans colorway
- Hook: Clover Amour US Size J/10 (6.00 mm) crochet hook
You can also use stitch markers to help with identifying the turning ch.

Stitch Multiple
Multiple of 2 (+ 2 for foundation ch)
Notes about the stitch:
- This stitch is worked over two stitches, so if youโre using this stitch in a design youโll need to plan to work it into a space that has an even number of stitches.
- When working rows entirely made up of crossed double crochet, youโll need to plan one dc at the beginning of the row and one dc at the end of the row. This will allow you to have even edges for shaping, borders, or seaming.
- In this tutorial, the ch 3 at the beginning of a row counts as 1 dc. An alternate option is to use a stacked single crochet (stsc) at the beginning of the row, if desired.
